Oral Appliance Therapy to Treat Snoring

Snoring & Sleep Apnoea Examination

Do you suffer from snoring or obstructive sleep apnoea? If so, contact our friendly dentists at Hunter Family Dentistry today. We assist patients who deal with chronic snoring, providing a full examination of their teeth, joints and jaw, as well as confirming whether they’ve had a sleep apnoea test or discussion with their GP. From there, we may refer the patient to a sleep physician for testing. If test results show that the patient does not need a sleep apnoea machine (CPAP machine), then we can provide appliance therapy. By taking impressions of your mouth, we can design a custom oral appliance that’s used to prevent the patient from snoring. For snoring treatments in Terrigal, contact Hunter Family Dentistry today. We look forward to seeing you at our dental clinic.

FAQ

  • What is an oral appliance?

An oral appliance is a custom-fitted dental device (similar to a mouthguard), that’s used for the treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea.

  • Does it work as well as a CPAP?

A CPAP machine effectively treats sleep apnoea, regardless of the severity. Oral appliances, on the other hand, are designed to treat mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea and snoring. It’s important to note that each patient is different and oral appliances may not be suitable. As such, consult your dentist and GP.

  • How does an oral appliance work?

An oral appliance pushes your lower jaw forwards. This is done in order to open up your airway more.

  • Does it have any side effects?

This depends on the patient. Some patients may feel discomfort; however, prolonged use tends to reduce any form of discomfort or pain. Saliva build-up is also a symptom that some patients may experience. Talk to your dentist beforehand to discuss in detail.

  • How do I look after my oral appliance?

Ensure you brush and floss your teeth before fitting your oral appliance. It’s important to wash your oral appliance once a day in order to remove plaque build-up. Once washed, ensure it dries out fully.
